The tool is called an “Allen key” because the Allen Manufacturing Company was the first to commercially produce and market hexagonal socket screws and the wrenches designed to turn them. The term “Allen key” became a generic term, like “Kleenex” for tissues, even though other companies now also produce and market similar tools.
